Biography

Barbara Stein has been teaching and doing art for most of her life. Her work in batik, pastel, watercolor and clay has been exhibited in New York City, Long Island and Vermont (see list of exhibitions). She works realistically, yet also enjoys experimentation, and is interested in understanding the changing effects of light on objects and natural forms.

Having lived in northern Vermont from 1971-76, she continues to be inspired by its pastoral landscape and wonderful atmospheric changes. Prior to that time, she taught elementary school art in Harlem, NY, and worked for an interior architecture firm as an interior designer.

Barbara studied Fine Arts at Carnegie-Mellon University, where she received a B.F.A. degree in 1967, and receiving an M.A. degree in Art Education from New York University in 1970. Until 2009, she served as President and on the Board of The Art Guild of Port Washington, a community-based non-profit arts organization.

Teaching adults and children of all ages has been a way of for Barbara to share her love of art and belief in its importance. She taught courses in batik at the University of Vermont from 1971-1974. In 1973, she received a grant from the Vermont Council on the Arts and taught art workshops throughout the state. Upon returning to New York, Barbara taught outreach programs through The Museum of Contemporary Crafts and The Jewish Museum. During this time, she received a grant to work as an Artist in Residence for the Studio in a School Association, and also taught art at an elementary school near the Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Current work includes teaching at Farmingdale State College, painting and exhibiting. As President of The Art Guild of Port Washington she was instrumental in founding an Art Center at the historic Elderfields Preserve in Manhasset, N.Y. She has studied painting with Joseph Peller and Tom Torak, and drawing with Ephraim Rubenstein at the Art Students League.
